MESA FINALS WINNERS!! Congrats!!

MESA Finals - Isabella Cano, 1st Place - Mousetrap Car Design

Donovan Andrade and Jose Friars - 2nd Place - Balsawood Glider

In late March, 30 students from Jackson competed in the Preliminary Competition at CSULB.  For the preliminaries, students that are associated with MESA at CSULB compete against each other by grade levels in several areas of engineering, there were approximately 600 students who competed that day.   Three of our sixth graders won first place in three categories, Isabella Cano won first place in design and first place in speed for her mousetrap car.  Donovan Andrade and Jose Frias won first place as a team with their Balsawood Glider.  Winning first place in the competition automatically qualifies you for the Regional Competition.

Last weekend the Regional Competition was held at UCLA.  Students who placed first in their category during their preliminaries met at UCLA to compete against each other.  There were students from each of the MESA college sites in our area, CSULB, CSULA, USC, and UCLA.  At the Regiional Competition Isabella Cano won first place again for her Mousetrap Car design and only lost on speed by tenths of a second.  Donovan Andrade and Jose Frias won third place with their Balsawood Glider.  They were part of a great group of competitors from Paramount Unified School District.

4th-5th GRADE SCIENCE FIELD TRIP

This year our Leona Jackson fourth and fifth grade Knights enjoyed an awesome field trip to the California Science Center. The classes were able to explore the different world ecosystems. For example, students were able to see some awesome sea life, fish, eel, and even tiger sharks. After seeing all the cool stuff inside of the Science Center, our Jackson Knights were lucky enough to be able to see The Space Shuttle Endeavour! It was huge, and very exciting to be able to see in real life!

Below is a slideshow of some of the pictures taken during the field trip.

MESA

After months of hard work, the Jackson MESA Team successfully competed at the MESA Preliminary Competition at CSULB. Although the competition was tough, our team came away with two gold medals and a 1st Place Ribbon. This is a great accomplishment as our Jackson Knights were competing with schools not only in the Paramount Unified School District, but also schools in Bellflower, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Santa Fe Springs, and Wilmington.

Congratulations to all our MESA Knights. In addition, lets wish Donovan Andrade, Jose Frias, and Isabella Cano luck as they head to the Regional Finals at UCLA this upcoming April 23rd, 2016.

Principal's Message

Jackson Families,

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and was able to relax and spend some quality time with their family and friends.

As we move toward the end of the first semester, I encourage all students to work towards their personal best.  If you are not achieving to your full potential, it is a good time to rethink your past actions and set goals to improve your efforts in the second half of the school year.  The following are some tips to help increase student achievement:

  • Set aside time to read and do your homework every night
  • Listen attentively, participate in class, and don’t forget to ask questions
  • Take good notes that you can refer back to as you complete your assignments
  • Do not procrastinate (i.e., start projects and assignments right away)
  • Study for tests and quizzes early and often

Parents are encouraged to become partners in their child’s education as well. Check in with your child daily and find out what they learned each day and what they need to do each night. Have your child demonstrate their understanding by having them explain how they solved a problem or where they found their evidence. Parents of our 6-8 students can also get involved by continuously checking Parent Vue, a program that provides allows you to communicate with teachers, as well as monitor student grades and attendance online.   Please call the office if you have not received this information or are having trouble signing in. It is our hope that the ParentVue will improve student achievement by increasing collaboration with parents.

Here are just a few announcements as we begin a new week...a new month...and a new year:

  • DROP OFF REMINDER – We have a new cross walk in front of the school.  Please be mindful of students as they cross Jackson Street to enter/exit the campus.  Remember that we also have our drop off zone in the front of the school as well.  We want to remind you to use the entire lane, pull as far forward as possible, drop your student off, and then merge back into the travel/exit lane, turning right only as you exit back on to Jackson Street.   The goal is that this will continue to minimize traffic backups during our drop off times and make our parking lot safer for our students and community. We MUST be courteous and work together in order for this to continue to be effective.
  • UNIFORMS As a reminder, students are to wear white shirts with a collar and blue pants (jeans, sweats, etc.).
  • PREPARATION This month, students will begin to take assessments, both in the classroom and online, that will prepare them for the upcoming Smarter Balanced assessments in May.  By providing students with early opportunities to apply their skills and knowledge in a similar testing environment,   anxiety will be lessened and the ability to persevere on these high stakes exams will increase.
  • K-N-I-G-H-T-S-  As we move into the new year, please continue to talk with your students about demonstrating the Jackson School Guidelines for Success: Knowledgeable, Never Give Up, Inspire Greatness, Goal-Oriented, Have a Positive Attitude, Take Responsibility, Scholars for Life.

As always, thank you for your continued support!
